The Sonoff Basic R2 is an excellent entry point for anyone beginning their home automation journey. While it is a basic switch, it delivers all the essential connected features you would expect — including scheduling, inching, and remote control via the eWeLink app. It is also the most affordable smart switch in the Sonoff range, making it an attractive option for those looking to experiment without a large upfront investment.

However, it’s important to note that the Basic R2 is rated for a maximum load of 10A. While this is sufficient for most small appliances — and many kettles (though you should always check the rating of your specific appliance) — it is not suitable for high-powered devices such as geysers or large heaters. The Basic R2 is best used with low to medium-power appliances.

Another consideration is its physical size, which can make installation challenging in tight spaces or smaller electrical boxes. Additionally, it lacks some of the more advanced features found in higher-end Sonoff models — for example, the "magic switch" functionality and external trigger support available on the Sonoff Mini R4.

In short, if you need a simple, affordable way to bring automation to basic appliances, the Sonoff Basic R2 is a great choice — just be mindful of its limitations.
